 Professional Ethics 

THE BETTER BUSINESS BUREAU OF EASTERN PENNSYLVANIA promotes ethical business practices and integrity through self-regulation in the marketplace. It establishes membership principles and provides general monitoring of advertising in the marketplace, dispute-resolution services and consumer/business education programs.

 

PENNSYLVANIA SUPREME COURT DISCIPLINARY BOARD investigates complaints brought under the Pennsylvania Rules of Professional Conduct.

The disciplinary system for lawyers is governed by the Pennsylvania Rules of Disciplinary Enforcement, a broad set of rules by which the Supreme Court of Pennsylvania carries out its constitutional authority to regulate the practice of law in Pennsylvania.

 

THE PUBLIC RELATIONS SOCIETY OF AMERICA has a Philadelphia chapter that is one of its largest, with more than 450 members. The group has a code of ethics that it enforces to keep its members honest.

 

TEMPLE UNIVERSITY LAW SCHOOL has several faculty who teach Professional Responsibility. One developed professional-responsibility videotapes and teaching modules for practicing lawyers, and taught Professional Responsibility throughout the country. She has also presented lectures on Judicial Ethics to the National Judicial College, Beijing, and Sichuan Normal University,Cengdu,China. She served as an ethics consultant under USAID/ Asia Initiative to University of Philippines in Manila on teaching legal ethics.    

 

OFFICE OF THE INSPECTOR GENERAL of the City of Philadelphia investigates criminal and/or integrity-related complaints of fraud, corruption, and abuse in all departments, quasi-governmental agencies under the mayor's jurisdiction, and any contractors or consultants receiving city funds. It also provides investigative expertise to any agency/authority requesting assistance.

 

PHILADELPHIA BAR ASSOCIATION PROFESSIONAL RESPONSIBILITY COMMITTEE evaluates the norms governing the conduct of lawyers under the Code of Professional Responsibility, the Canons of Judicial Ethics, the Rules of Disciplinary Enforcement, and the lawyer regulatory functions of the Pennsylvania Disciplinary Board.

 

THE UNIVERSITY OF PENNSYLVANIA SCHOOL OF MEDICINE, through its Curriculum 2000 module, created an ethics and professional faculty that trains students in professionalism and humanism, "with the goals of preserving and promoting humanism, multi-culturalism and idealism in pursuit of medical education; cultivating medical collegiality; and developing the patient-physician relationship." For instance, its Bioethics and Professionalism class teaches ethical analysis of cases, in conjunction with Penn's Center for Bioethics.
