THEATRE ALLIANCE OF GREATER PHILADELPHIA says it "strengthens and leads the region's richly diverse theatre community by promoting positive awareness and serving as a resource for information, professional development and advocacy." The alliance is a member-based service and leadership organization composed of nonprofit professional theaters, performing artists, and affiliated organizations.

THE KIMMEL CENTER, INC., owns and maintains the grand new Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts, which includes Verizon Hall, Perelman Theater, Innovation Studio and the Merck Arts Education Center. It also manages the Academy of Music, owned by the Philadelphia Orchestra Association. The two sites are home to eight resident performing arts organizations, including the Philadelphia Orchestra, Opera Company of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania Ballet, Chamber Orchestra of Philadelphia, American Theater Arts for Youth, PHILADANCO, Philadelphia Chamber Music Society, and Philly Pops. Kimmel Center's mission also includes arts in education and community outreach.

R5 PRODUCTIONS is a countercultural, "Do It Yourself" rock music promotions agency that a young entrepreneur started in his bedroom "to provide the Philadelphia area with cheap, friendly, all ages shows, in a honest intimate setting." He says Philadelphia suffers from a lack of a medium-sized all-ages venue, creating a situation in which band often play other major East Coast cities but skip over Philadelphia. R5 shows are done in various locations, halls, warehouses, basements, colleges and universities. It's a great example of the "DIY" music culture, that succeeded the underground "rave" culture of the 1990s.

BRAT PRODUCTIONS says it serves a new, younger generation of theatergoers by "creating theater that breaks the rules; theatre that tests conventions; theatre that rocks. Brat cites two missions: "to raise awareness about social issues, and to give artists a supportive environment in which to create work that responds to social issues." The subject chosen for 2006 was Modern Slavery.

AMERICAN MUSIC THEATER FESTIVAL is a national organization, based in Philadelphia, devoted to creation and development of new and innovative music theater ranging from opera and music drama to musical comedy and experimental works.

THE ANNENBERG CENTER is a major performing arts center on the Penn campus sponsoring theater, music, dance, and theater for children.

THE ARDEN THEATER COMPANY stages stories by the greatest storytellers and operates a continuing education program for professional and amateur actors.

THE GROUP MOTION WORKSHOP combines "movement meditations, dance games and structured improvisation with live music." The focus is not performance but exploration and development of personal creativity through movement and group interaction.

INTERACT THEATER COMPANY stages challenging and unusual plays that focus on cultural issues in contemporary life. Its educational outreach program incorporates theater as a tool to promote diversity, awareness and social change.

THE PENNSYLVANIA OPERA THEATER brings opera to life through fully realized productions which make music and drama equally vivid and compelling. All productions are sung in English in order to take audiences to the heart of the music and drama immediately and directly.

THE PHILADELPHIA FOLKLORE PROJECT is committed to "the fundamental ways in which people organize, understand, and share their experiences and knowledge." The nonprofit assists artists and communities, conducts research, develops exhibitions, offers public programs, workshops and technical assistance, maintains an archive, and issues publications and resources.

PLAYS AND PLAYERS offers a host of productions, blending the traditional with the modern, from "Hamlet" to "Gentlemen Prefer Blondes," from "Lysistrata" to "You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown."

SOCIETY HILL PLAYHOUSE is Philadelphia's oldest professional theater and claims a a commitment to the "contemporary repertory" that it says is a model for theaters citywide.

THEATRE INTERATIONAL EXCHANGE is a nonprofit organization based in Philadelphia that collaborates with foreign theater artists and companies in the creation of works which transcend national and linguistic boundaries.
