THE POWHATAN RENAPE NATION was created in South Jersey in 1982 when New Jersey recognized as an Indian nation a group claiming descent from the original Indians of the area. The state deeded them 350 acres in wooded Burlington County. A nonprofit Powhatan entity now offers some social services to the American Indian community in New Jersey. It also has a museum and cultural events to educate the general public.
THE MCNEIL CENTER FOR EARLY AMERICAN STUDIES at the University of Pennsylvania has a directo who is an expert in Colonial North America and on Native American history before 1800. His "Facing East from Indian Country: A Native History of Early America" was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize.
RUTGERS-CAMDEN AND TEMPLE LAW SCHOOLS both have faculty whose teaching interests include Federal American Indian Law.
