Incheon, South Korea
The Sister City relationship with Incheon, Korea, was established in 1984. Since then, with the help of the Korean community in Philadelphia, it has become one of our strongest. Incheon is a rapidly growing port city that is the shipping and industrial center of Korea's western coast. In 2001, it opened the largest airport in the world and in June 2002, it hosted the World Cup soccer matches in conjunction with Japan. In addition, many professional exchanges have taken place with Incheon and, in September 2000, the Incheon Trade Office USA opened in Philadelphia. The Trade Office works with the Sister Cities office to promote trade and cultural understanding between our two cities.
In September 2009, Nancy Gilboy attended the 7th Asia Pacific Cities Summit in Incheon and represented Philadelphia.More than 1,000 delegates from key AsiaPacificCities, and Incheon’s SisterCities, attended the event that included mayors networking forums, business matching and investment promotion, city development exhibitions, interactive workshops highlighting the participating cities’ best practices and a young professionals program.
