 Human & Civil Rights 

THE REFUGEE INITIATIVES PROJECT, at the Solomon Asch Center for Study of Ethnopolitical Conflict, implements psychosocial and community programs with survivors of violence.

 

THE ANTI-DEFAMATION LEAGUE, Eastern Pennsylvania Region, tracks local hate crimes and works with law enforcement and neighborhood leaders to craft local responses.

 

RUTGERS-CAMDEN LAW SCHOOL has several faculty scholars in international law, human rights and criminal law. One has authored or co-authored over a hundred articles and ten books, including "International Criminal Law: Cases and Materials." Another focuses on the enforcement of international human rights norms through domestic courts and has litigated cases addressing human rights violations in countries around the world, including Bosnia, Guatemala, Haiti, East Timor and Ethiopia.

 

TEMPLE UNIVERSITY AND VILLANOVA LAW SCHOOLS both have faculty who teach International Law and International Human Rights. One at Villanova was an attorney with the Lawyers Committee for Human Rights and lectures regularly on the topic of international human rights law.

 

PROJECT VOICE was established by the American Friends Service Committee to strengthen the voices of immigrant-led organizations in setting the national agenda for immigration policy and immigrants' rights. Project Voice combines local and national organizing, education, and outreach campaigns to achieve a strategic impact on key immigration and refugee issues, including legalization, abuse of authority, community relations, workers' rights, and other human rights issues.

 

WOMEN'S CAMPAIGN INTERNATIONAL, at the Fels Institute of Government at Penn, is a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization dedicated to increasing the participation of women in democratic processes and civil society. WCI says it "provides training and skills building to help women overcome the political, social and economic obstacles that limit their involvement in government and in assuming leadership positions throughout society." The WCI Chair, Marjorie Margolies-Mezvinsky, is a senior lecturer at the Fels Institute. Her courses on Empowering Women Leaders in Emerging Democracies and Dealing with the Media are based on some of the international training done by WCI.

 

WOMEN'S INTERNATIONAL LEAGUE FOR PEACE AND FREEDOM,

U.S. SECTION, is a longtime dissident group that says its goal is to "link and challenge root causes of oppression, especially racism, sexism, heterosexism, militarism, economic disparity, and political disempowerment" around the world, and to "build and strengthen relationships and movements for justice, peace, and radical democracy."

 

THE MIDDLE EAST FORUM is a local think tank whose goal is to define and promote American interests in the Middle East, defining interests to include fighting radical Islam (rather than terrorism), working for Palestinian acceptance of Israel, urging the Bush administration to better manage its democracy efforts, reducing funds going to the Middle East for energy purchases, more robustly asserting U.S. interests vis-à-vis Saudi Arabia, and containing the Iranian threat.
