ESPERANZA USA, a large Hispanic faith-based community development corporation, says one of its national programs is Pacto de Esperanza, which educates clergy about the HIV/AIDS epidemic and seeks to break down taboos and the barriers to accessing treatment and critical social services.  The outreach efforts include providing technical assistance and small grants to Hispanic faith-based organizations with existing HIV/AIDS programs, developing culturally and constituency appropriate literature to educate the Hispanic community about HIV/AIDS.

 

STAND FOR AFRICA is a project created by Philadelphia pastor Herb Lusk to mobilize U.S. churches and organizations to spread awareness of the HIV/AIDS pandemic in Africa. Lusk, a prominent black pastor who leads Greater Exodus Baptist Church,  held several large crusades to benefit AIDS orphans in Africa. He formed Stand for Africa to identify African faith and community-based organizations that can undertake HIV/AIDS treatment activities, and to raise funds for continued support of African faith and community based organizations providing HIV/AIDS prevention, education, treatment, and care in 11 African countries.

 

ANNENBERG SCHOOL OF COMMUNICATION has a professor whose research specialty is health communication and behavior, HIV prevention, behavioral interventions, sexual risk behavior, cultural influences on risk-reduction, violent behavior among adolescents, theories of health behavior, and design and methodology.

 

ACTIONAIDS, Inc., is a nonprofit, community based organization that provides professional, individualized care to people infected and affected by HIV disease in the Philadelphia area.

 

RUTGERS-CAMDEN LAW SCHOOL has a professor who teaches a course on HIV/AIDS & the Law and is a former staff attorney at the HIV Law Project, where she worked on issues of mandatory HIV testing, under-inclusion of women and people of color in clinical trials, mandatory partner notification, and named-based HIV reporting.

 

THE AIDS LAW PROJECT OF PENNSYLVANIA, a nonprofit, public-interest law center, has handled thousands of requests for HIV-related legal services. It lists the following issues it addresses: AIDS discrimination; access to health care wills, living wills and powers of attorney; Social Security disability benefits; welfare benefits; insurance coverage; housing; financial issues and debt; family law; immigration.

 

THE AIDS POLICY PROJECT calls itself a "visionary group of very experienced AIDS activists on the East Coast and in San Francisco that is raising the alarm about the need for immediate global AIDS funding."

 

AIDS SERVICES IN ASIAN COMMUNITIES (ASIAC) is a community-based nonprofit "dedicated to providing culturally sensitive and language appropriate HIV and other related health services to Asians and Pacific Islanders and their partners, friends, family members, and service providers in the Philadelphia area."

 

THE SAPPHIRE FUND says its mission is "to support the efforts of organizations contributing to the health and well-being of Philadelphia's gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender and HIV/AIDS communities and those who support them." It aids new and existing organizations, and conducts advocacy and outreach to the public and to philanthropies.

 

ACT UP is a grassroots organization committed to "democratic process, self-education, and the empowerment of PWHIV to take charge of their own lives and health."

 

THE PHILADELPHIA HEALTH MANAGEMENT CORPORATION provides a variety of community health programs, including follow-up with HIV infected individuals who have lost contact with clinical care providers, prevention outreach targeting substance abusers, and a program called PALMS, which uses improvisational theatrical performance to teach HIV prevention skills to teens and young adults.

 

THE AIDS ACTIVITIES COORDINATING OFFICE coordinates HIV/AIDS planning and policy activities for the Philadelphia Department of Public Health, conduct AIDS surveillance activities in accordance with federal, state and county laws, and conduct HIV/AIDS education and training for professional, civic and community groups.

 

PHILADELPHIA FIGHT is a nonprofit organization with the goal of providing people with the most current and complete information and support so that they can make informed decisions. Its programs include the Aids Library, which is a lending library open to the public; Critical Path AIDS Project Newsletter; The SafeGuards Project, a gay and bisexual men's health program; and the Youth Health Empowerment Project (Y-HEP), prevention, mobile testing, safe sex workshops and support group programs.

 

CHILDREN'S HOSPITAL OF PHILADELPHIA has a Center for Pediatric and Adolescent AIDS that cares for about two-thirds of Philadelphia's pediatric AIDS patients, providing everything from education to clinical care to patient outreach to extensive research.

 

WE THE PEOPLE LIVING WITH AIDS/HIV is a nonprofit providing practical support to low-income and minority people living with HIV. The programs offered include: Case Management, Emergency Food Cupboard, HIV/AIDS Diagnostic Testing, HIV/AIDS Drop-in Center, HIV/AIDS Risk Reduction Education, Housing Counseling, Soup Kitchen-We the People, and Support Services for People with HIV/AIDS.

 

BETHESDA PROJECT is a faith-based, nonprofit that has a Transitional Housing program for men living with HIV/AIDS.

 

CALCUTTA HOUSE  is a residential facility for adults with AIDS.

 

CAMP DREAMCATCHER is a summer camp for children whose lives have been affected by AIDS/HIV. It also has programs and ongoing support throughout the year.

 

CHILDREN'S CHOICE INC., founded 1982, is a program for adoption of children with HIV/AIDS.

 

CONGRESO DE LATINOS UNIDOS is a community-based agency that includes free HIV/AIDS prevention and support services.

 

EPISCOPAL COMMUNITY SERVICES offers STARR (Supportive Therapy for AIDS Affected Relatives), consisting of individual counseling and family workshops.

 

GERMANTOWN SETTLEMENT offers a Wisdom Program, providing free testing, and other programs for adults who have tested positive for HIV/AIDS.

 

THE GREATER PHILADELPHIA URBAN AFFAIRS COALITION has a Minority AIDS Project.

 

INTERCULTURAL FAMILY SERVICES INC offers AIDS education and prevention services in Cambodian, Vietnamese, Lao, Thai, Tagalog & Chinese languages.

 

KENSINGTON HOSPITAL, a community-based hospital, has a HIV program in Spanish.

 

THE PHILADELPHIA AIDS CONSORTIUM, as contract administrator for over 65 community organizations, provides medical, support, prevention and education to over 24,000 people.

 

UNITED METHODIST NEIGHBORHOOD SERVICES provides a no-fee AIDS program.

 

THE VISITING NURSE ASSOCIATION OF GREATER PHILADELPHIA offers specialized AIDS care.

 

THE WEST PHILADELPHIA COMMUITY MENTAL HEALTH CONSORTIUM has a HIV program that provides counseling, testing, education and referral.
