Douala, Cameroon

In 1986, Douala and Philadelphia became Sister Cities.  Douala is the largest port in West Africa and the unofficial economic capital of the Cameroon.  With 1,448,300 people, it is the largest city in the country and has a richly diverse population that represents more than 130 ethnic groups.  Douala was actually named after a 17th century tribe that settled in the coastal area of Cameroon.  Located on an estuary of the River Wouri, the city is a delightful mosaic of colorful markets, historic churches and museums.  An equatorial forest on Douala's outskirts serves as a sanctuary for dozens of species of birds.  Since 1986, delegations from each city have met to explore technical assistance programs and initiate cultural exchanges.  In August, 2003 a delegation from Douala was in Philadelphia for three days to strengthen existing ties between the cities and to discuss serious issues such as port security, HIV/AIDS prevention & education, disaster relief and economic development with local experts.
