IVC's BBQ History
For 25 years the BBQ is a way for us to create an "American experience" for guests from abroad.
It all started in 1986, when Penn asked us to create an "American experience" for
ten Japanese businessmen who were learning business English.
Ten young IVC professionals, our "Compass" members, grilled burgers & hot dogs,
served cold beer and enjoyed the company of ten men from Japan.
The first few bbq's were on Boathouse Row, but by 1996 we had outgrown the space and
moved to the Waterworks on the Schuylkill. We soon outgrew the Waterworks, too, and
tried Fairmount Park for a year before moving to Sister Cities Plaza for many years.
In 2007 the threat of a heavy storm forced us to look at alternatives. Thanks to our wonderful
caterer, Catering By Design, we moved to the beautiful College of Physicians.
Oddly, everyone loved the air-conditioning and low humidity, so that's where we've stayed!
Oh, and from just twenty people 25 years ago, we're expecting more than 500 again
this year! But how can it still be a friendly event with so many people?
It's easy: through the silly S-P-E-E-D Networking,
with the "I Don't Know Anyone Tables," with the "Dreadful Art Hour," plus and all the friendly people who are part of IVC and our work.
Citizen diplomacy engages citizens in international relations. Meeting counterparts and experiencing everyday American life provides an authentic & more accurate view of the "real" U.S.
