FARM TO CITY is a Philadelphia- based program whose goal is to unite communities, families, and farmers year-round through good locally grown food. It is supported in part by the Pennsylvania Association for Sustainable Agriculture and the Small Farm Success Project. Among the group's projects is Community Supported Agriculture, a system of buying clubs whereby a local farmer provides his produce during the growing season in exchange for payment before the season begins.
THE RODALE INSTITUTE RESEARCH works closely with farmers, scientists, and extension personnel to develop new farming and gardening methods that protect the land, improve productivity, and reduce or eliminate the use of costly and environmentally harmful chemical fertilizers and pesticides. The institute conducts on-farm research at its 333-acre center, as well as on more than 30 independent farms that are part of Rodale's On-farm Research Network. Rodale Press is the publisher of Rodale's Organic Gardening, a guide produced to assist families in growing chemical-free food and flowers.
THE STATE DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURE establishes and maintains programs dealing with dairy, livestock, poultry, mink, honey, aquaculture, field crops, potatoes, tobacco, fruit, vegetables, mushrooms, maple syrup, and floriculture.
THE PENNSYLVANIA ASSOCIATION FOR SUSTAINABLE AGRICULTURE is a coalition of the state's farmers, consumers, industry, and educators working toward the development of sustainable food and farming systems. PASA was founded in 1992.
THE PENNSYLVANIA HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY is the producer of the Philadelphia Flower Show and home to Philadelphia Green, an extensive urban greening program. Philadelphia Green is the nation's most comprehensive urban greening program. Since 1974, it has supported the development and ongoing care of community gardens, neighborhood parks and high-profile public green spaces in Philadelphia. Working in partnership with neighborhood residents, community organizations and city agencies, the program uses greening as a community-building tool. It educates and empowers people to make the city a more attractive and livable place through horticulture.
CHESTER COUNTY COOPERATIVE EXTENSION, operated by Penn State University, has agents who advise residents on agriculture and land-use issues through educational programs, publications, and events. Chester County is experiencing intense land-development pressure, with farmland at a premium.
FOOD TRUST is an innovative nonprofit that works to increase access to affordable and nutritious foods; improve the health of children and adults, and support local farms. It operates weekly farmers' markets, which features food demonstrations, nutrition education, and health screenings. It convenes the Philadelphia Nutrition Education Network, a collaboration of agencies, as well as the comprehensive School Nutrition Policy Task Force, a group working to improve the food and nutrition education in Philadelphia schools. In addition, it advocates for public policies that sustain small family farmers.
THE ASSOCIATION OF CONSERVATION DISTRICTS, an entity of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, provides all counties in the state except Philadelphia with assistance regarding improved land management practices.
