The Abruzzo Region of Italy

Philadelphia and the region of Abruzzo have had a partnership since 1997.  Many Philadelphians' heritage can be traced back to the Abruzzo region, creating a strong connection between our citizens.  Located on the Adriatic coast of Italy, its capital is L'Aquila.  Abruzzo is very picturesque and has many parks and historic castles.  The regional cuisine boasts talented home cooking that utilizes many local products such as olive oil, vegetables, and fish. The economy of the Abruzzo region has traditionally been based on agriculture and crafts (wrought iron, ceramics, fabrics and lace); however, in recent years, the region has undergone remarkable industrial development.  Today, engineering, textiles, financial activity and agriculture are all dominant sectors.  There are several seaside resorts, such as Francavilla al Mare, that attract tourists to the region. Abruzzo is a true hidden treasure of Europe from which tourist enjoy everything from the natural beauty of its beaches to winter sports in its cascading mountains.

In early June 2011, newly elected Mayor Luciano Marinucci and Vice Mayor Massimiliano Bronzino Cesario visited Philadelphia with a delegation from Abruzzo.  Their program included a meeting with Mayor Nutter, meeting with officials from the Philadelphia International Airport and a tour of the Curtis Institute of Music.  They also attended IVC's First Thursday reception.  Photos of their visit are below.
