FIRST THURSDAY
October 6
At this week's First Thursday we have a large group of interesting people from around the world waiting to meet you - in fact more than 75 people from 29 countries and regions!
First Thursday is always free for IVC members, and just $15 for non-members. If you don't RSVP, it's $20 at the door. Email Alan Hatfield to let him know you'll join us.
If you've been here before you know how it works. But in case this is your first First Thursday, you need to know that it isn't a typical cocktail reception - you have an important mission!First Thursdays are popular and friendly because everyone hasa role to play. When you pick up your name badge, be sure to get the list at the registration desk with our guests' names, their interests & why they're here. It also tells you what color ribbon they're wearing to easily identify them in the crowd. Then walk up, sayhello and you'll see how easy it is to start a conversation. We guarantee this will be a friendly evening of citizen diplomacy that will create lasting and positive impressions of the U.S., Philadelphia and you. Email or call Alan Hatfield at 215-683-0992 to RSVP.
State Department's "International Visitor Leadership Program"
Join us in welcoming ten teachers, teacher-trainers and consultants from Poland who are in the U.S. on the U.S. Government's highest exchange (and the program for which IVC exists). The focus of this group's program is educational methods and programs about the Holocaust and training courses for teachers and students that focus on practical aspects of educational projects on tolerance and the Holocaust. The group will also examine institutions and individuals involved in the research, presentation, conservation and education of American cultural heritage. One of the teachers is from Torun, our Sister City in Poland.
Sister Cities Program
In addition to the IVLP participant from Torun, Poland (see above), representing Temple University's International Business Association (IBA) are students from Douala, Cameroon and Incheon, Korea. Also, join us in welcoming back Haoren from Tianjin, China who is currently enrolled at Temple University and spent the summer at home in Tianjin.
Speaking of Tianjin... We are pleased to welcome the multi-talented Beijing-born Director of Business Development for NovaThermal Energy, a Philadelphia headquartered company commercializing a technology from Tianjin. (NovaThermal's geothermal technology provides HVAC savings of up to 60% to large buildings in urban areas.) In addition to his work with NovaThermal, our guest is also a famous tenor who has performed throughout the world, including at China's World Expo in Shanghai.
IVC Special Guests
From China are two individuals who are interning for the law firm of Blank Rome. They are from Guizhou Province, and are part of a four month program at Stony Brook University. Drexel University, La Salle University, Philadelphia University, St. Joseph's University & Temple University
Studying in another country and culture for a year or longer is difficult, especially when English isn't your first language. Too often students don't get off campus enough to see what a friendly place Philadelphia is. So several year's ago IVC created Discover Philadelphia, a program to create positive American experiences for Philadelphia's international graduate students. Five schools are represented at October's First Thursday and their graduate students are looking forward to meeting some friendly Philadelphians. In alphabetical order the schools are:
1. From Drexel University's MBA program are students from India, China, Greece, Hong Kong and Vietnam.
2. From La Salle University's MBA and MS program are students from China, India, Nigeria and Uzbekistan
3. From Philadelphia University are four students from China enrolled in the university's Textile Engineering program.
4. From St. Joseph's University are eight International MBA students from China, Saudi Arabia and Vietnam.
5. From Temple University's Beasley School of Law are lawyers, judges and prosecutors pursuing their LL.M. degree. They are fromAlbania, Argentina, Australia, Bangladesh, Belarus, Brazil, China, Egypt, Germany, Indonesia, Iran, Ireland, Japan, Korea, Liberia, Mexico, Netherlands, Nigeria, Pakistan, Turkey and Ukraine. Also from Temple are five members of the International Business Association.

Home Stay Hosts needed for Japanese business men & women!
Every fall we are asked to match our wonderful hosts and host families with business men and women from Japan for a memorable one-night overnight stay - the ultimate "American experience." This year's date is Friday, November 18th. We will send a separate email about this opportunity but wanted to give hosts a heads-up now! If you are interested in hosting and creating a great American experience, email Jennifer McGinn at jennifer.mcginn@phila.gov
Share Your Thanksgiving?
IVC members are some of the nicest people in the world. Who else would cook an entire Thanksgiving dinner in July (with family and all!), to show this very special American holiday? And one new IVC member is cooking a turkey next month on the Sunday BEFORE Thanksgiving for 15 Penn LL.M.'s, and then cook again on Thanksgiving day for his family. Since the holiday is coming up soon, do let us know if YOU would like to host one or more guests of the State Department's International Visitor Leadership Program or host a Fulbright Scholar on Thanksgiving. We don't know yet who will be here or how many, but to get onto the list now, please let Jennifer McGinn know at jennifer.mcginn@phila.gov!
