FIRST THURSDAY
September 2
|
At this week's First Thursday we have a large group of interesting people from around the world waiting to meet you - in fact, more than 100 people from 47 countries and regions! For attendees observing Ramadan, the Courtyard Marriott will serve additional food at sundown, 7:31 p.m. Thank you Courtyard Marriott!
First Thursday isn't a typical cocktail reception - you have an important mission! First Thursdays are so popular and friendly because everyone has a role to play. When you pick up your name badge, be sure to get the list with our guests' names, their interests & why they're here. It also tells you what color ribbon they're wearing so you can easily identify them in the crowd. Then walk up, say hello and you'll see how easy it is to start a conversation. We guarantee this will be a friendly evening of citizen diplomacy that will create lasting-and positive-impressions of the U.S., Philadelphia and you.
Join us this Thursday, September 2nd at 5:30 p.m. at the Courtyard Marriott to welcome our special international guests on several programs, including the University of Pennsylvania Law School's International Masters of Law (LL.M.) Graduate Program & Philadelphia's Sister Cities Program. From Penn, we just learned about five Brazilian executives in Philadelphia learning English and looking forward to practicing it with you. And welcome a rep from the U.S. Global Leadership Coalition & learn about Smart Power.
First Thursday is free for IVC members, and just $15 for non-members. If you don't RSVP, it's $20 at the door. Email Alan Hatfield or call 215-683-0992 to RSVP.

This year there are at least six Sister City students studying in Philadelphia for their undergraduate and graduate degrees. Four will be joining us at First Thursday receptions and three have been awarded Sister City Scholarships. This week we will again be joined by our favorite two sisters from Douala, Cameroon - Danielle and Cynthia. Cynthia is studying for her M.B.A. at La Salle, and Danielle is waiting to hear back from medical schools in the region after finishing her Masters in Biology at Temple. And from Tianjin, China, welcome back Haoren, who just transferred to Temple to study business. And Yeoun Joo from Incheon, Korea who also transferred and will be studying at Temple, too! Both are participating in the Sister Cities Scholarship at Temple, and Cynthia is participating at La Salle.

Smart Power - IVC Special Guest helping make the world safer
|
Join us in welcoming Avi Glanton, who is with the U.S. Global Leadership Coalition, an influential network of 400 businesses and NGOs; national security and foreign policy experts; and business, faith-based, academic & community leaders in all 50 states supporting a smart power approach of elevating diplomacy & development alongside defense to build a better, safer world.
What is smart power? Hillary Clinton used it frequently during her Senate confirmation hearing as she became Secretary of State in 2009, "We must use what has been called smart power - the full range of tools at our disposal - diplomatic, economic, military, political, legal, and cultural - picking the right tool, or combination of tools, for each situation. With smart power, diplomacy will be the vanguard of foreign policy."
IVC members are already actively involved with smart power. Join us to learn more!
