TURKEY - DECEMBER 15 - 18, 2010 - Six Turkish visitors will be coming to Philadelphia to study the development of small and medium businesses in the United States. They will examine how the United States Government encourages growth for small and medium business enterprises and the methods by which the United States supports export promotion for such businesses.The group will meet with representatives from the U.S. Department of Commerce and the Minority Business Development Agency. UKRAINE - DECEMBER 8 - 11, 2010 - Five Ukrainian prison officials will be visiting Philadelphia to learn more about the penitentiary system in the United States. Specifically, the group will focus on the topics of medical and psychological support programs, substance abuse programs, and techniques used to halt the spread of disease within correctional facilities. AFGHANISTAN - DECEMBER 1 - 4, 2010 - A group of eighteen visitors from Afghanistan will be coming to the IVC to further their understanding of the role that local government plays in the United States. While here, the group will study how the separation of power between federal, state, and local government works, as well as the various roles that state and local governments play in different areas of the United States. RUSSIA - NOVEMBER 24 - 27, 2010 - A group of eight museum heads and directors from Russia will be visiting the Philadelphia region to learn more about how national historic sites and museums are managed in the US. While here, they will visit the National Constitution Center, Independence National Historic Park, and the Philadelphia Museum of Art. DENMARK - NOVEMBER 16 - 18, 2010 - Two Danish government officials will be visiting Philadelphia to learn more about the programs here for helping minority youth. Specifically, while in Philadelphia, the group will focus on the cultural and health-based initiatives in place to help these young people. Their program in Philadelphia will play a part in their overall goal of furthering their understanding of education, health, culture, and crime prevention programs for minority youth in the U.S. Department of State's International Visitor Leadership Program.
THAILAND - NOVEMBER 11 - 13, 2010 - Two aviation security officers from Airports of Thailand Plc. will be visiting the IVC in order to study the aviation security system in place in the United States as well as to further their understanding of the field of international security issues as a whole. While here, the pair will meet with members of the FBI, the ICE, and the Department of Homeland Security. On top of this, they will also experience some of the cultural activities that Philadelphia has to offer, including a visit to the National Constitution Center. EUROPE - NOVEMBER 1 - 4, 2010 - A group of eight visitors from various European nations will be visiting Philadelphia to learn more about U.S. politics, society, culture, and history. While in Philadelphia, this group will examine the process of poll watching, receive a federalism briefing and keynote address, participate in election results watching, and receive an election de-briefing. MONGOLIA - October 10 - 13, 2010 - A hospital director from Mongolia will be visiting the IVC to learn about the U.S. health care administration system. The director will receive an overview of hospital management in the U.S. as well as hospital disaster management and community preparedness. The visitor will also have the opportunity to build partnerships with American healthcare professionals. While in Philadelphia, the delegate will visit the New Jersey Health Care Quality Instutute, the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, and IMA Healthcare Consulting. LITHUANIA - October 9 - 11, 2010 - Two visitors from the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Lithuania will be visiting Philadelphia to observe U.S. practices in the field of cultural policy. They will be introduced to U.S. cultural diplomacy programs, methods of preserving heritage sites, and ways in which art education programs interact with other cultural activities in the U.S. They will also learn about cultural programming and management outside of major U.S. arts centers. While in Philadelphia, the visitors will meet with an independent curator, the CEO of the National Museum of American Jewish History, and a research analyst from the Greater Philadelphia Cultural Alliance. They will visit the Corzo Center for the Creative Economy (University of the Arts) and the oldest Orthodox Christian Church in Philadelphia. They will examine the needs and responsibilites of higher education and its changing relationship with other elements of society. The delegation will also participate in discussions on issues such as degree equivalency, accreditation, student aid, admissions, counseling services, and accessiblity. While here, they will visit Drexel University's Steinbright Career Development Center and the Lebow College of Business. They will meet with a representative from the Educational Testing Service, guidance counselors from the Episcopal Academy, the admissions office of Temple University, and the Middle States Association. UZBEKISTAN - OCTOBER 7 - 9, 2010 - A group of four prominent Uzbek librarians will be visiting Philadelphia in order to study the wide variety of organizational systems in place within American libraries. The group will learn about current management and policy-making strategies in both public and private libraries as well as the role that computer and IT specialists play in the American library system. While in Philadelphia, the group will meet with administrators and librarians from the Friends Select School and the Library for the Blind and Physically Handicapped as well as with deans and IT specialists from Drexel University's iSchool, which offers a nationally recognized program for library science. PHILIPPINES - OCTOBER 6 - 12, 2010 - A group of five library directors from universities throughout the Philippines will be visiting the IVC in order to learn more about how new social media and information technology tools are being integrated into American libraries. As heads of the American Corners of their respective libraries, the visitors will also be working to better their knowledge and understanding of American society and culture in order to better share and explain this information to local audiences. While here, the group will visit the Historical Society of Philadelphia, the Independence National Historic Park Archives, the Friends Select School, the Samuel L. CHINA - SEPTEMBER 30 - OCTOBER 2, 2010 - A group of three visitors from China will be visiting Philadelphia to learn more about the system of Educational Administration in the United States by focusing on organizational structures in place within the school system and current teaching techniques and methodologies used by teachers and administrators. Furthermore, the group will also examine the role that crisis intervention systems play in modern schools, highlighting the role of student counselors. While here, the group will visit administrators from the School District of Philadelphia and a local charter school as well as attend meetings with members of the Philadelphia Commission on Human Relations & Fair Housing and a local mediation center. NIGERIA - SEPTEMBER 23 - 25, 2010 - A group of ten delegates from Nigeria will be visiting the IVC to learn more about religious freedom and interfaith dialogue in the United States. While in Philadelphia the group will visit a prison to discuss how prisons treat religion and religious freedom, an all girls' high school, and an organization that works to reduce violence through youth sports. SYRIA - SEPTEMBER 21 - 25, 2010 - A group of ten visitors from Syria will be visiting the IVC to learn more about higher education administration in the United States. The objectives of this project are to explore the implications of a decentralized system of higher education and how institutions and the government seek to ensure equality in such a system. In addition, this group of delegates will examine how administrators use fund-raising and other activities to support the universities and they will also look at the differences between public and private universities. While in Philadelphia, this group will have the opportunity to meet with administrators to learn about current challenges and approaches to the admissions process, provision of student services, faculty recruitment, curriculum development, and workforce training. SOUTH KOREA - SEPTEMBER 13 - 15, 2010 - Two visitors from South Korea will be coming to the IVC to learn more about specific legislative and regulatory processes in the United States. While in Philadelphia this group will examine the interactions between government, political parties, congress, media, and NGO's, specifically, looking at how the U.S. government works with industries to develop policy and regulate equality of pharmaceutical and personal care products. This group will have the opportunity to meet with the Penn Program on Regulation, Inolex (cosmetics company), the FDA regional office, and the ECRI Institute. THAILAND - SEPTEMBER 11 - 15, 2010 - A visitor from Thailand will be visiting the IVC to learn more about the U.S. judicial system. More specifically, the visitor will look at court room management, trends in court room technology, dispute resolution, mediation processes, and the appeal process at local and federal levels. While in Philadelphia the delegate will have the opportunity to visit the Dispute Resolution Institute, the City of Philadelphia Law Department, and meet with a judge from the third circuit district court. HONDURAS - SEPTEMBER 10, 2010 - A group of five visitors from Honduras will be visiting the IVC to discuss tolerance and the arts. This project was created to help the Honduran arts community find ways to contribute to the national healing process after a coup removed the government from power last fall. It is believed that art will promote a necessary reconciliation between government and society in Honduras. While in Philadelphia, this group will be visiting the Mural Arts Program of Philadelphia which is an organization that was designed to transform society through artistic expression. ITALY - SEPTEMBER 5 - 8, 2010 - A visitor from Italy will be coming to Philadelphia to take a particular look at urban issues in the United States and the various innovative ways to address them. Specifically, this visitor will examine urban planning models that address affordable housing, environmental sustainability, and social welfare needs of the growing immigrant population. The overall purpose of this program is to gain a better understanding of how public and private institutions in the United States address the challenges of communication for development, sustainable urban development, and networking modalities. JAPAN - AUGUST 22 - 24, 2010 - A guest from Japan will be visiting the IVC to learn more about international aviation policy development, aircraft engineering, and the certification process of newly produced aircraft. This visitor from Japan is an aeronautical egineer, and he will have the chance to visit FAA facilities that are involved with aircraft development and production, in addition to meeting a number of aviation leaders and policy makers at multiple aviation associations. MEXICO - August 14 - August 19, 2010 - A group of ten guests are coming through the IVC of Philadelphia to learn about grassroots citizen action groups in the U.S. and the role they play in policy making at the local, state, and national levels, particularly ways in which these groups are able to develop and strengthen political and social institutions. This delegation will focus on government transparency, anti-violence, human rights, empowering youth, and the environment. In addition, the visitors will learn how social media can be used to build existing networks of supporters, promote awareness, and affect change. GREECE - August 5 - August 10, 2010 - One guest from Greece is coming through the IVC of Philadelphia to learn about the U.S. educational system -- how it is structured, funded, what support programs are available, and what the different types of schooling are, such as, private, public, charter, home, and online. The focus in Philadelphia will be on the multi-ethnic and multilingual environment, specifically looking at how schools address the growing number of Spanish- speaking students and what problems exist in racially mixed schools. JAPAN - July 29, 2010 - One guest from Japan will be visiting through the IVC of Philadelphia to learn about economic security and trade in the United States. PARAGUAY - July 28 - July 31, 2010 - A Youth Secretariat from Paraguay will be visiting through the IVC of Philadelphia to enhance his government's youth programs in rural areas outside the capital. While in Philadelphia, the visitor will meet with state, city, and local officials, grassroots programs, leaders of youth organizations, police departments, church leaders, and findraising organizations that all work with and support the youth. IRAQ - July 22 - July 25, 2010 - A delegation of six guests from Iraq will be coming to Philadelphia to learn more about NGO's and Civil Society in the United States. While in Philadelphia, the visitors will learn about innovative management strategies for NGO's that look particularly at social and political issues. The visitors will also learn more about the dynamic relationships between business, government, and non- governmental organizations.Specifically, the visitors will be meeting with the administration from the University of Pennsylvania School of Law, an executive director from the ACLU, a representative from Women's Way, and they will also be visiting the National Constitution Center. While on their visit, the delegates will be looking at the social, economic, and political origins of federalism, particularly looking at young peoples' involvement in business, law, politics, unions, education, health care, agriculture, and volunteer efforts. The delegates hope to learn what training and skills are necessary to enhance leadership in younger generations. CANADA - June 26 - July 5, 2010 - A delegation of four visitors will be visiting the IVC to discuss ways of combating human trafficking. While in Philadelphia, they will be visiting places like Philly Stop Modern Slavery, Covenant House, Defender Association of Pennsylvania, the FBI, and the Philadelphia Police Department, which are all organizations designed to deal with cases of human trafficking in the United States. Philly Stop Modern Slavery is an advocacy group to push for change, while Covenant House acts as a safe haven for potential victims of human trafficking. While in Philadelphia, the delegates will be visiting the Institute for the Study of Civic Values, Temple University's History Department, and Independence National Historic Park. While in the United States, the visitors will be examining the role of women in social and political change and how governmental and nongovernmental organizations support women leaders. The visitors will be meeting with different women's groups, such as, Women's Campaign International, Geneveive Society, and Muslim Community Organization Programs for Women and Girls. POLAND - May 26 - 29, 2010 - A delegate from Poland will be visiting the IVC to futher examine the criminal justice system in the United States, particularly looking at international cooperation, extradition issues, and financial crimes. The visitor will look at the judicial system on all levels (structure, jurisdiction, and caseload), learn about the investigation and prosecution of white collar crimes, and examine international intelligence sharing on transnational crimes. PAKISTAN - May 15 - 18, 2010 - The IVC will be hosting a delegate from Pakistan who is visiting the U.S. to learn about sanitation, particularly in agriculture. The delegate will be visiting ports to learn about the screening of agricultural imports, looking specifically at sanitary phytosanitary issues. The visitor will also be visiting the USDA center. SERBIA - May 13 - 16, 2010 - A delegate from Serbia will be visiting Philadelphia to learn about U.S. heritage and the principles that uphold it. Specifically, this delegate will be looking at the impact of the U.S. federalist system of government on American culture and society at all levels. In addition, the delegate will learn about the structure and management of museums, fundraising practices, public relations, marketing, and resource sharing. The delegate will be visiting Philadelphia University, the Philadelphia Art Museum, Penn Museum, and Amish country to further her understanding of American culture. INDONESIA - May 13 - 19, 2010 - A delegation of seven visitors will be coming to Philadelphia to learn about U.S. laws ad policies pertaining to the issue of human trafficking. During their visit the delegates will meet with U.S. federal and state law enforcement agencies to discuss investigation and prosecution tactics and learn the importance of cooperation between the police and prosecutors in the U.S. The delegation will be visiting the Criminal Justice Center, the Pennsylvania Attorney General's Office, and be meeting with a trafficking panel. IRAQ - May 11 - 15, 2010 - A group of five visitors from Iraq, including judges, lawyers, legal scholars, and Ministry of justice officials, will be visiting Philadelphia to learn about the principles of judicial independence involving the operation of federal courts and the structure of the state and municipal court systems. CHINA-May 2010-A delegation from Tianjin, Philadelphia's Sister City, will visit Philadelphia for a professional development program. The delegation is interested in meeting their counterparts to discuss potential business opportunities. IVC is working with the Pennsylvania Chinese American Chamber of Commerce (PCACC) to assist in arranging meetings with pharmaceutical, biotech and life sciences companies. ANGOLA, CAPE VERDE, MOZAMBIQUE, SAO TOME AND PRINCIPE-April 22-27, 2010- Eight visitors will attend the Women and Law program in Philadelphia. The program will provide a historical overview of the U.S. judicial system, its underlying principles and traditions, with a particular focus on the expansion of women's legal rights. Participants will gain insights into the breadth and depth of U.S. women's participation in, and access to legal and judicial systems with a specific emphasis on programs designed to promote human and civil rights affecting the advancement of women's status in political, economic and social structures. The program will focus on laws such as those governing gender discrimination in the job market, as well as new initiatives in combating trafficking in person, domestic violence and abuse. Visitors will explore the role of various organizations working through the legal system to improve women's status in areas such as health, education and economic independence. ISRAEL-April 13-16, 2010- Five visitors from Jerusalem will participate in the Cultural Institutions program. In this program, they will analyze the relationship between cultural organizations in both local and national authorities, evaluate marketing and publicity disseminating strategies to youth and nontraditional audiences using innovative mass communication technologies, examine U.S. multifaceted cultural events and festivals and analyze the relationship and cooperation amongst various social sectors. RUSSIA-March 25th-April 15, 2010 (FIRST PROGRAM) and June 10- July 1, 2010 - There will be two programs in 2010 for Russian religious leaders to study interfaith issues in the United States. The first program takes place March 25th to April 15th and will be located in both Philadelphia and Washington, D.C. The first program will include ten participants from the Republic of Tatarstan. The second program takes place June 10th to July 1st and will be located in both Philadelphia and Washington, D.C. The second program will include ten participants from Moscow-St. Petersburg, North Caucasus, the Republic of Buryatia, the Republic Tatarstan and the Republic of Kalmykia. For both programs, IVC will provide a total immersion into interfaith issues and American culture by arranging for the participants to meet with professionals in their field, live in Philadelphia area homes, and be exposed to a diversity of American experiences. IRAQ-March 31-April 4, 2010- Five visitors will have the opportunity to participate in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) program. The program offers educators a practical guide to the U.S. educational system at the primary, secondary, and tertiary levels with a specific focus on English Language Programs (curriculum, language labs, classroom instruction methods, and technological teaching aids), international exchange opportunities, and university training methods for ESL teachers. TURKMENISTAN-March 25-30, 2010-Three visitors are participating in the Public Private Partnerships program in Philadelphia. This program will discuss the various quasi-public organizations that facilitate small business development such as the Chamber of Commerce and WTC. Other important features of this program will explore U.S. practices in administering government managed, long-term service contracts for publicly-owned facilities. These visitors came to the U.S. under the auspices of the Department of State's International Visitor Leadership Program.
ANGOLA, CAPE VERDE, MOZAMBIQUE, SAO TOME AND PRINCIPE-March 25-28, 2010-Five visitors are participating in the Transparency and Good Governance program. This program will enable participants to discuss the meaning and implications of transparency, ethical standards, and accountability and how these principles are defined, monitored and enforced. Topics for discussion will include common ethical values, laws requiring public disclosure of government actions, and the role of the media and citizens groups in holding government accountable. These visitors came to the U.S. under the auspices of the Department of State's International Visitor Leadership Program.
BURKINA FASO, COTE D' IVOIRE, DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF CONGO, MOZAMBIQUE, NIGER, NIGERIA, UGANDA-March 25-30, 2010 -Six visitors are attending the Entrepreneurship and E-Commerce program. This program will cover topics on economic decentralization, regional cooperation, and public-private partnerships, as well as illustrate the social, economic, and political factors that influences and encourage the development of small businesses and entrepreneurs in the United States. At the same time, they will investigate the field of e-commerce for entrepreneurs exploring new business opportunities created by the internet and the expansion of the global marketplace and exchange ideas with small and large organizations, including business incubators. These visitors came to the U.S. under the auspices of the Department of State's International Visitor Leadership Program.
CENTRAL and SOUTHEAST ASIA-March 17-20, 2010-Three visitors will participate in the Science Education in Primary and Secondary Schools program. This program will provide an overview of science education issues at the federal, state, local and grassroots level, while examining primary and secondary curriculum development, evaluating various afterschool science programs and science laboratory work. These visitors came to the U.S. under the auspices of the Department of State's International Leadership Visitor Program.
RUSSIA-March 6-9, 2010-Ten visitors will participate in the Materials Development for English Teachers program. From this program, participants will gain an understanding of diversity of the U.S. society and culture, contemporary American visual arts, techniques on integrating arts resources into classroom instruction and practical aspects of Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL). These visitors came to the U.S. under the auspices of the Department of State's International Visitor Leadership Program.
FULBRIGHT-March 2010 - Check back for details-Each year, our office arranges a hospitality dinner for first-year foreign Fulbright students who participate in enrichment seminars in Philadelphia. The 2010 Philadelphia Fulbright Enrichment Seminar will take place in early March. Approximately 150 foreign Fulbright students from various universities throughout the United States will participate. These students will represent over seventy different countries and are pursuing graduate degrees in diverse fields of study. These students are here through the Fulbright Program.
ARGENTINA-February 23-26, 2010- Seventeen visitors from Argentina's Fundacion Universitaria del Rio de la Plata (FURP) will visit the following three cities, Washington, D.C., Philadelphia, and Harrisburg for the Political, Social, and Economic Issues in the U.S. program. This two week Voluntary Visitor program is designed to increase their understanding of key contemporary issues as well as the status of U.S.-Argentine relations. These visitors came to the U.S. under the auspices of the Department of State's International Visitor Leadership Program.
