Mayor & Laura with Wachovia check
First THURSDAY with IVC!

Philadelphia's
 "international salon"
& the friendliest networking!

Make friends.
Make contacts.
Make peace.

First, the BBQ!
Thank you Wachovia Bank!
Ok, that photo above isn't about First Thursday, but it lets us thank Wachovia Bank and its Senior VP & IVC Board member, Laura Haymann, for the Bank's generous $10,055.55 donation for our 55th year.  Mayor Nutter joined Laura for the check presentation to Chairman John Goldschmidt and President Nancy Gilboy, and then participated in our prize drawing.  Joining us at the event were 490 people who had a great time helping us raise funds and create a fun "American experience" at our 23rd BBQ.  Mayor on phone with winnerPictured here is the Mayor with John, Nancy and Laura.  The Mayor is calling Stephanie Todd, who had left moments before learning she'd won the 47" HDTV and Blu Ray DVD player (donated by Walmart) and the DVDs of Rick Steves' 80 shows about Europe.  The Mayor called Stephanie's work number, where he was asked to repeat his name before being put put on hold.  He was persistent and in good humor and reached her on her cell to surprise her with the announcement that she had won.  It was another fun IVC BBQ, and all funds raised at the event support IVC's international relations work with the State Department and City of Philadelphia.   Next year's event will be Thursday, July 22nd.
FIRST THURSDAY - August 6

February's  First THURSDAY international reception features guests of honor from

Algeria, Argentina, Bangladesh, Benin, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, China, Colombia, Denmark, Germany, Guatemala, Guinea, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Kenya, Korea, Krygyzstan, Libya, Malawi, Mauritius, Myanmar, Nicaragua, Pakistan, Pakistan, Portugal, Russia, Tanzania, Thailand, Turkey, Uganda, Ukraine & West Bank.
So do join us this Thursday, August 6th at 5:30 p.m. and welcome our special international guests on programs representing the City of Philadelphia, Drexel University and Penn.  Email Alan Hatfield or call 215-683-0992.

But first, here's your "job description" for IVC's receptions: On Thursday, when you pick up your name badge, don't forget to ask for the sheets that list our guests' names, their interests & why they're here. It also tells you what color ribbon they're wearing so you can easily identify them in the crowd. Then walk up, say hello and you'll see how easy it is to start a conversation! We guarantee this friendly citizen diplomacy will create lasting positive impressions of the U.S. and Philadelphia.

FPRI Interns
Some of those friendly people greeting you at the BBQ were interns from the Foreign Policy Research Institute who have been working this summer with IVC Board member, Jim McGann.  Not only were they helpful to IVC's staff, they also enjoyed the "American experience" that our BBQ creates each year.  In fact, they enjoyed it so much they're now coming to First Thursday, this time as guests. The schools they represent are SUNY - College of Environmental Science & Forestry (Bolivia), Lund University (Denmark), University of Southern California (Germany), University of Pennsylvania (Mauritius) and the University of New Hampshire (USA).
