St. Joseph's University  

Welcome MBA candidates from China and India attending  St. Joseph's University's School of Business. IVC's monthly First Thursday is a great way for them to meet Americans in a friendly, informal "American cocktail party" setting. Join us for this great opportunity to make new contacts and welcome these business students from China and India!

University of Pennsylvania English Language Program

Welcome twelve executives from Japan and Korea attending Penn's International Business Communications Program.  First Thursday is a great way for them to meet Americans and practice their English in a friendly, informal "American cocktail party" setting. Join us for this great opportunity to learn about networking in Japan!

International Visitor Leadership Program

U.S. Dept. of State:  
- From Russia, meet seven guests who are in the U.S. to examine various aspects of the adoption process in the U.S.  They will explore the varying responsibilities between federal and state government and their role in international adoption policies.

University of Pennsylvania School of Law

Joining us are three PENN LL.M students from Australia, Italy and Sweden. who recently arrived in Philadelphia for a year at Penn for their advanced American LL.M. degree.  This year-long program offers Philadelphia's law firms opportunities to develop relationships for expanding overseas.

During their one year in Philadelphia they will be participating in IVC's Discover Philadelphia program, funded by Commerce Bank and the City of Philadelphia.  IVC will connect them with the City's law firms and cultural resources and help them - and Philadelphians - develop a stronger international network while they fall in love with Philadelphia.

United Nations Association of Greater Philadelphia 

Meet the Netherlands-born President of the United Nations Association of Greater Philadelphia (UNA-GP), the local chapter of the United Nations Association of the U.S. (UNA-USA). Affiliated with the World Federation of United Nations Associations, the UNA-USA is the largest grassroots foreign policy organization in the U.S. building public support for the United Nations.  The local chapter is an active one and its head has lived, worked and been engaged in independence movements and public health activities around the world before coming to Philadelphia where he was involved in the creation and implementation of the Masters of Public Health program at Penn where he is an adjunct faculty member.


Sister Cities Program

Tianjin, China 
Joining us for the last time are the six artisans from Tianjin who leave Philadelphia within the next week to return home after completing the restoration of the beautiful Friendship Gate in Chinatown.  Philadelphia has been working for the past five years on the gate's restoration, and the final stage has been the repainting of its beautiful and intricate design.  Ours is the only authentic Chinese gate in the United States because it was designed and built by Chinese artisans.  IVC thanks Temple University and its School of Communications and Theater for their valuable help with the project. The six artisans and their work has been filmed by Temple during the weeks the artisans have been here.

U.S. Dept. of State:  
- From Azerbaijan  -  seven legislative aides  who will examine democratic electoral process at federal, state, and local levels and are coming to Philadelphia under program theme "The Role of Legislative Aides in Policymaking in the U.S."
 
- From Malaysia - a community program coordinator to study " NGO Management"

Meridian International Center:
- From the Middle East, meet  two medical professionals who will be exploring many aspects of "Child Health" in the U.S.. They will visit research institutions and care facilities in Philadelphia and address preventive health programs for children.

Returning this month are our two favorite relatives from two Sister Cities.  Danielle, from Cameroon, is in graduate school at Temple University studying Biology.  Aneta, from Poland, is IVC's Communications Manager and is working on a trip for Philadelphia students to go to Torun this October to begin youth exchanges with Torun and Philadelphia schools.

Temple University Beasley School of Law

More than 60 lawyers and judges from 31 countries just arrived in Philadelphia for a year at Temple for their advanced American LL.M.degree.  This year-long program offers Philadelphia's law firms opportunities to develop relationships for expanding overseas. 

They will be joining us at the First Thursday reception and are invited to International First Fridays.  They come from: Columbia, Croatia, Egypt, Ghana, Haiti, Kenya, Libya, Morocco, Nigeria, South Africa, Suriname, Turkey, United Arabe Emirates and Zimbabwe.

During their one year in Philadelphia at Temple they will be participating in IVC's Discover Philadelphia program.  We will connect them with the City's law firms and cultural resources and help them - and Philadelphians - develop a stronger international network. 

La Salle University - School of Business

Joining us are La Salle University's newest group of international MBA and professional students just beginning their academic year in Philadelphia.  Join us to welcome them to Philadelphia and the U.S. and help them develop their American network!

Joining us this week are our friends from Mosul, including one who just passed his TOEFL exam! (TOEFL is Test of English as a Second Language.)  Join us to congratulate him!

Russia:
Also joined us  two officials from the government of Nizhny Novgorod, including the Vice Chairman of the Duma (City Council). They also attended Philadelphia's ceremonies for the opening of the Olympics in Chinatown on Friday.

More than ninety lawyers and judges from 29 countries just arrived in Philadelphia for a year for their advanced American law degree.  They joined us at the First Thursday reception, representing these countries: Australia, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, Cayman Islands, Chile, China, Colombia, Costa Rica, France, Germany, Greece, Hong Kong, India, Iran, Israel, Italy, Japan, Korea, Mexico, Nigeria, Norway, Philippines, Russia, Taiwan, Thailand, Turkey, United Kingdom, and Venezuela.
 
They will be in Philadelphia for one year and participating in IVC's Discover Philadelphia program.

University of Pennsylvania - Int'l Business Communication Program

Joining us were eighteen business executives from Italy, Japan & Spain attending Penn's special program for executives.  First Thursday is a great opportunity for them to practice their English... with you!

Middle East Partnership Initiative

Joining us again this month were four women - lawyers and executives from four countries, Egypt, Israel/Palestinian Authority, Kuwait& Oman -who finish their Fellowships this month at three generous firms/organizations: BDP Int'l Global Logistics (Egypt).  Dilworth Paxson (Israel) and PECO/Exelon (Kuwait & Oman).  Our thanks again to these three good "Corporate Diplomats" and to members of the Forum of Executive Women for supporting these women and this important program - and for helping us make new friends in four countries and raise Philadelphia's international profile.

Additional Guests of IVC

At our monthly reception in June, you may have met the Honorary Consul of Bulgaria. In August, it was Bulgaria Part II. Joining us was a second-year  Fulbright Scholar at Tuft's Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy in Boston. He is interning with the Foreign Policy Research Institute in Philadelphia this summer and served as a friendly IVC volunteer at our Annual BBQ. On Thursday, meet this Fulbright Scholar and chat with him about Bulgaria's recent accession to the European Union!

Rosemont College & Japan

We welcomed to Philadelphia  nineteen students from Ferris University in Yokohama, Japan.  These young men and women arrived on July 31st and will be here until August 23rd.  Rosemont is looking for weekend homestay hosts for a few of the students.  If you'd like to volunteer and be part of their American experience, join us on Thursday to meet them and get involved.

Consular Corps Association of Philadelphia

As part of IVC's program to honor the Consular Corps, we were pleased that the Honorary Consul of Bulgaria joined us.  This distinguished jurist had been a USAID lecturer in Bulgaria during the Summers of 2000-2002, and in 2004 was appointed by the Republic of Bulgaria to serve as Honorary Consul in Philadelphia.  He is also a senior judge on Superior Court and was previously elected to two 10-year terms on Superior Court beginning in 1981, and was the court's president judge from 1996 to 2001.  Join us to meet Hon. Stephen J. McEwen and learn more about Bulgaria, which became a member of the EU in 2007.
 
International Visitor Leadership Program
 
Joining us on Wednesday was an impressive group of fourteen men and women from eleven American countries (Central and South America, that is), including elected and appointed national and local officials, journalists, lawyers, and others looking at "Transparency and Good Governance in the U.S."  They begin their 21-day State Department IVLP program in Philadelphia before heading off to four additional cities.  This program is designed to provide participants with insight into ethical standards of conduct in government, and characteristics of good governance that underpin the American democratic system.  They will have opportunities to examine the principles of transparency, accountability and ethics and explore how these principles are defined, monitored and enforced.   The countries represented are Bolivia, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, and Venezuela.  This Spanish-speaking group will be accompanied by three State Department interpreters but if you speak Spanish this is a great opportunity to keep up your skills!

First impressions are important and we are pleased that Philadelphia's IVC was selected to arrange the opening segment of this important North American/U.S. IVLP visit.
 
Sister Cities Program

Joining us were two lawyers from Tianjin who are at Temple's Beasley School of Law on its LL.M. program until mid July. One is a prosecutor and the other is with the China Bank Regulatory Commission. They are part of a larger group from China attending Temple's Law School (see below). Join us to welcome these two new "family" members to Philadelphia!

Cameroon & Poland:  Returning this month were our two favorite relatives from two Sister Cities.  Danielle, from Cameroon, is in graduate school at Temple University studying Biology.  Aneta, from Poland, is IVC's Communications Manager and is working on a trip for Philadelphia students to go to Torun this October to begin youth exchanges with Torun and Philadelphia schools. 
 
Temple University's Beasley School of Law

More than thirty lawyers and judges were attending Temple's Law School in China on a 15-month LL.M. program that has brought them to the Philadelphia campus.  Many of them will be joining us at the First Wednesday reception, including two from our Chinese Sister City, Tianjin (see above).
Temple's Law School administers the LL.M. program in China (the only one of its kind) through a cooperative venture with Tsinghua University in Beijing.  Temple is one of Philadelphia's most international universities with campuses in Rome and Tokyo, and has prestigious study abroad programs in London, Beijing, Paris, Mumbai and other locations worldwide

 
Middle East Partnership Initiative


Find out what life has been like in Philadelphia for the past month for four women from the Middle East!

Joining us again this month were four women from four countries, Egypt, Israel, Kuwait and Oman who had been selected from among thousands for a special State Department program to empower women executives and lawyers from the Middle East.  They began their Fellowships last month at three generous firms/organizations: BDP Int'l Global Logistics is hosting a business woman from Egypt.  Dilworth Paxson's international law department is hosting an Arab-Israeli lawyer, and PECO/Exelon welcomes two women in its Law and Finance Departments from Kuwait and Oman. Our thanks again to these three good "Corporate Diplomats" and to members of the Forum of Executive Women for supporting these women and this important program - and for helping us raise Philadelphia's international profile.

Additional Guest of IVC

From France, we welcomed a woman from Marseilles who is  a member of the "Association France-Etats-Unis," a friendship group established after WW II.  This group entertained members of the U.S. Navy when they came to harbour but with the fleet rarely there today, it now welcomes visiting choral groups, artists, etc.  She is a friend of long-time IVC member and host, Marietta Nettl, who has settled in Marseilles and is very missed by her friends here.

SISTER CITIES PROGRAM
- Aix-en-Provence, France

What a group!  Twenty-four Sister City "relatives" from Aix-en-Provence, France arrive in Philadelphia on Tuesday and Wednesday
for an exciting cultural exchange on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday! Included are twenty-two folk dancers and musicians,
a Chef of Provencal cuisine, and the Curator of the Atelier Cezanne.  They will all stay with Center City families and are looking forward to enjoying Philadelphia's friendly hospitality. Activities include  performances and a cooking demonstration at schools,
a private lecture at the Barnes Foundation, as well as activities open to the public (read their public schedule).
Chef Durand will be featured at Philadelphia's great restaurant, Patou!
Don't miss the reception & dinner with two French chefs at Patou, 312 Market Street, on Thursday, May 8th.  And don't miss the reception and talk about Cezanne at Bistro St. Tropez, 2400 Market Street - 4th Floor, on Friday, May 9th (there are costs for both dinners).  Read more details on these and the free activities that you can enjoy, too!  And just off the plane the folk dancers will hurry to First Wednesday for their first chance to meet Philadelphians.  Rumor has it that First Wednesday could offer a brief performance as well as gifts of candy from Aix!

INTERNATIONAL VISITOR LEADERSHIP PROGRAM - IVLP
U.S. Dept. of State:

- From Iraq, meet the Mayor of Mosul, the country's third largest city with a population of two million. He has been attending the U.S.-Arab Cities Forum in Chicago before going to Minneapolis, Philadelphia and New York City.  His personalized IVLP program includes looking at waste water treatment, municipal budgeting, and how a city works with private business and non profit organizations to ensure citizens have cultural opportunities.  He will also observe Thursday's City Council session.
 
- From Turkey, meet two university officials examining foreign policy through meetings with government officials and experts at universities and think tanks.  They look to deepen their understanding of current U.S. foreign policy.

-From Russia, welcome three officials from Gazprom, Russia's largest company. While in Philadelphia they are looking to meet with counterparts involved with investments, economic forecasting and the tools involved with forecasting. Gazprom produces 86% of the nation's natural gas, controls 17% of the world's reserves, and is also the world's largest gas producer.

-CONSULAR CORPS of Philadelphia:
At February's First Wednesday, you could have talked to Philadelphia's official representatives from many countries, including Canada, Chile, Czech Republic, France, Israel, Korea, Latvia, Romania, Spain and others. Consuls are either career diplomats or appointees who represent the country by handling everything from visas to business promotion.

-INTERNATIONAL VISITOR LEADERSHIP PROGRAM:

- From Liberia, there was  the managing editor of a major paper. As the person with oversight responsibility of the editorial and business departments, he is visiting the U.S. to meet media colleagues to see a modern news room and talk with other media managers about the challenges they face in financial and content management.

- From Algeria, Lebanon and Jordan were three young men with the program theme, "Student Leaders & Civic Responsibility." One of the areas they'll address is the role that civic education plays in promoting ethics, tolerance, and citizenship in a multicultural society.

-TEMPLE’s INTERNATIONAL MBA PROGRAM:
The Fox International MBA Program is known for its multinational team and study in metropolitan centers around the world. A semester abroad is part of the program and at First Wednesday you could have met students from Albania, France, Germany, India and the U.S. doing their U.S. semester at Temple's main campus in Philadelphia.

-
SISTER CITIES PROGRAM:
CAMEROON: From Douala,  a young woman getting her Masters in Biology at Temple.

KOREA: From Incheon, a senior government official. He is based at IVC and has been on a year-long fellowship in economic development. Next year he will return to a new senior-level position within Incheon's government.

POLAND: From Torun, a woman who  works at IVC as our Communications & Research Manager.  She's also working on a special invitation we received from Torun for up to 33 Philadelphia high schools students and adults to visit this October. Other than airfare, all expenses are covered by Torun and the high-scholastic high school Aneta went to! If you're associated with a school that would like to participate, contact Aneta with your interest. They'd love it if some of the students played basketball!

-PARTNERS FOR PEACE PROGRAM - IRAQ
If you've been to a First Wednesday before, you've met several men from Mosul - all with interesting stories - and tonight we add one more - another brave translator for the U.S. military. Join us to connect with them all and find out from people who know what really happening in
Iraq.

-DREXEL's ENGLISH LANGUAGE CENTER:
One of the Iraqi's who joins us monthly is a student at Drexel's English Language Center. He'll be there, too, and brings with him fellow students from France, Japan and Korea.
 
-ST. JOSEPH’s UNIVERSITY- IRAQ:
Also from Iraq will be joining us a reporter working with the Washington Post in Iraq and now is getting his Masters in English at St. Joseph's.  He has been a guest speaker on the National Public Radio, and writes articles about what's going on in Iraq.

-FROM SUDAN, was a young man, a "Lost Boy of Sudan" who is now studying at Arcadia University. The "Lost Boys of Sudan" is the name given to the thousands of boys who were orphaned or displaced by wars in Sudan. Tens of thousands were forced to flee their homes as villages were torched and families killed. These boys, some as young as six, walked hundreds of miles - some a thousand - to Ethiopia, only to be forced back, returning to Sudan and then to refugee camps in Kenya. Thousands died along the way from hunger, bullets or wild animals. There were 40,000 who survived, and some relocated to the U.S., including our guest. Welcome him to First Wednesday and learn more about his life and what you can do to help the people of Sudan.

- INTERNATIONAL VISITOR LEADERSHIP PROGRAM -
U.S. Dept. of State:
- From Croatia,  four guests looking at issues relating to "United Nations Security Council and U.S. Presidential Campaigns." Philadelphia is one of five cities they are visiting on this program. State Department interpreters will be there to help with your conversations.

- LA SALLE UNIVERSITY:
Paul Brazina, the new Dean of La Salle's Business School with expertise in e-commerce, fraud and forensic accounting. A teacher for many years and interim Dean, he was named Dean of the School of Business this past November. He was accompanied by a delegation from La Salle, including Elizabeth Scofield, Director of La Salle's MBA-Full Time Graduate Studies. (Liz, who also handles their international students, will receive IVC's Citizen Diplomacy Award at our 54th Annual Meeting on April 24th.)

- PARTNERS FOR PEACE PROGRAM - IRAQ
Joining us again this month were several men from Mosul, Iraq. All have interesting stories to tell about their lives in Iraq and their new lives in Philadelphia.

- SISTER CITIES PROGRAM - City of Philadelphia:
CAMEROON: Joining us again from our Sister City, Douala, was a young woman at Temple studying for her Masters in Biology. You could have practiced your French with Danielle - or hear her impressions of life in the U.S.

From Argentina, you coould have met eleven men and women professionals - lawyers, professors, economists, ministry employees and journalists, involved with an Argentinean organization that promotes non-biased, non-partisan dialogue on political, economic and social issues. They were in Philadelphia on the U.S. Government's highest exchange.

- INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS COMMUNICATION PROGRAM - University of Pennsylvania:
Our guests have been  participating in a four-week program at Penn for business professionals with advanced proficiency in English. These ten business men and women are from Brazil, Japan, South Korea, Spain and Taiwan.

- PARTNERS FOR PEACE PROGRAM - IRAQ
If you've been to a First Wednesday before, you've met several men from Mosul - all with interesting stories about their lives in Iraq. Join us to connect with them again and find out what they're hearing is really happening in Iraq.

- SISTER CITIES PROGRAM - City of Philadelphia:
